Giorgio Armani Beauty debuts in Singapore at Tang Plaza, Orchard Road

Luxury label make-up brands are a hit or miss. The most prominent and fashionable logos could be emblazoned on the products, but the formulas may be as useful as a toy make-up. Giorgio Armani Beauty, however, has made its way into the hearts and makeup pouches of the most critical makeup junkies. Apart from its sleek, bright scarlet packaging with the iconic GA logo, the products are luxuriously formulated for women on-the-go. My Armani To Go Cushion offers a satin-matte finish, lightweight, medium coverage, and moisturising skincare ingredients with SPF23. The label’s lipsticks are also a hit, especially the iconic rich red #400. The award-winning Lip Maestro Liquid Lipstick is packed with pigment, with a velvety-matte texture that is not drying. Also relatively long-lasting. Another of the brand’s bestsellers is the Luminous Silk Fluid Foundation. As its name suggests, it cocoons the skin with a comfort and lustre like liquid skin. Easy to blend, with medium to high-coverage and offering a glow, the formula is also award-winning and lightweight. To satiate demand for its coveted …

Sunday Riley: Treats for the skin

Good genes for great skin can come in a bottle. At least, according to the cult skincare label Sunday Riley. Apart from Good Genes, the Sunday Riley skincare line is also famous for its intensely colourful face oils that are as potent as they look.   The eponymous brand was founded by Sunday Riley, a cosmetic chemist, almost a decade ago. Today, the brand is available in 12 countries and cities, as it launches in Sephora stores in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Puredistance: Parfums with excellent sillage

When you have creatives at the helm of a fragrance label – instead of shrewd marketers out to make a quick buck – you get a nice range of standout perfumes. At Puredistance, the scents are noteworthy for their long-lasting sillage due to an exceptionally high content of perfume oil. All seven Parfum de Extrait in the range contain between 25 and 38 per cent of perfume, “hence the higher cost and prices”, explains the brand’s founder Jan Ewoud Vos. His rationale for using so much perfume oil in the juices: they fuse with the skin’s natural scent for longer. Prices of Puredistance parfums start from 175 euros for 17.5ml. Pick a crystal and 24 carat gold flacon and prices go up to 1,890 euros for 17.5ml. “As I give a perfumer a brief, I also give them an unlimited budget and time,” says Vos, who is also a photographer. This freedom is rare in the tightly-controlled perfume industry where profit margins rule the day. For that reason, when Vos announced in 2007 that he …

Three Cosmetics Balancing Lotion and Makeup Review

Launched in 2009, Three Cosmetics is a hit with beauty junkies because it pays attention to the small details. The texture is fine and luxurious; the scent soothing; while the products are gentle on the skin. Each skincare product contains at least 85 per cent natural ingredients, such as the essential oils of frankincense, neroli, rosa damascena, and eucalyptus leaf. They are also blended with ingredients from Japan: marine silt from Okinawa; bitter melon extract from Kyoto; Apple extract from Aomori; camellia seed oil and mandarin orange extract from Shizuoka; hot spring water of Oita; Yuzu seed oil of Kochi and fossilised coral powder from Yonaguni Island. The simple but luxe-feel of the packaging is another plus.  Besides skincare, the brand also offers base and colour cosmetics, as well as haircare.   The Beauty Gazette reviews four of the brand’s bestselling products. Three Balancing Lotion (S$95): A watery lotion that balances and lightly moisturises the skin. Contains sandalwood oil, frankincense oil, bergamot fruit oil, marjoram and rosemary oils; apple and rose geranium waters; bitter melon, …

Qween lash extensions at Tang Plaza, Orchard

When it comes to lash extensions, we are especially particular. Bushy peepers are not our thing. Eye infections are also the last thing we want, so hygiene and skill of the beautician are what we look out for at lash salons. At the newly-opened Qween (Tangs L4, Tang Plaza, Orchard), we asked for soft and natural-looking lashes. The kind that the best Japanese lash salons are known for. And Qween delivered, check out the result here. We went for single artificial mink 12 mm lashes with a relatively subtle curl, each one attached to a single natural lash. The job was done in about an hour in a small cabin room with a bed and a blanket, so you can take a snooze while your lashes are pretty-fied. Another plus, a collagen eye mask is placed on the undereye area to moisturise and brighten; while protecting the delicate skin from the lash glue. So you literally leave the salon bright-eyed with the lashes, nap, and effects of the eye mask. Jocelyn, the beautician, knew how …

Sulwhasoo Facial Treatment at Tang Plaza, Orchard Road

A facial treatment at Sulwhasoo soothes frayed nerves and perks up tired skin. The relaxing ritual begins with deep breaths of a scent of your choice: sandalwood, frankincense, pine, or plum blossom. I chose to indulge in the calming woodiness and incense-tinged sandalwood; and was told that the scent would be added in the skincare formulas used in my treatment. I tried the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Treatment ($220 for 60 minutes), an anti-ageing routine using the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream EX and complementary products, to rejuvenate the skin. A series of deep-cleansing steps, and masking are accompanied by the therapist’s deep and firm strokes that drain the lymph nodes on the face, décolletage and chest. There are no extraction procedures in Sulwhasoo facials. Following a warm compress, icy cool jade applicators were used for a refreshing facial massage that tightened and firmed my skin. The treatment felt so good; the 60-minute session felt short; a 90-minute one would have been perfect. After the facial, my skin had a mega-watt glow and was tighter, smoother, with pores …
