Best Sunscreens To Buy

Summer or autumn, pandemic or peace times, the one skincare item that you should always have in your beauty routine is suncare. If like me, you love hanging out on a sunny balcony, a bright spot at an outdoor cafe, or stepping out for a bike ride to unwind, never forget to slather on the sunscreen to slow down skin ageing. Here are my favourite sunscreens that I reach out for on a daily basis. They all have a few things in common: Non-sticky finish Feel lightweight on skin Have high broad spectrum protection Contain added skincare benefits (moisturising agents, anti-pollution ingredients, etc. Multi-purpose (provide skin-perfecting illusion) Work brilliantly as a make-up primer (just layer under foundation) I’ve added hyperlinks to the list so you can go straight and buy them (no affiliation, btw).

Kiehl’s Marks 170th Anniversary

Started out as a go-to apothecary of the neighbourhood in a street corner of New York in 1851, to say Kiehl’s has come a long way is, an understatement. To celebrate its 170th Anniversary milestone, the illustrious skincare label churns out a limited edition series of old-favourites. We’re particularly enamoured with the Heritage Rosewater Toner, which smells heavenly, and feels gentle yet refreshing. We’re petitioning for it to be made a constant in the collection. Also look out for the Essence Oils, named after the moods we all want to be in: Love Luring (jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang), Fortune Seeking (citrus and white tea), Jinx Removing (vetiver and sandalwood). The crowd-favourites come in classic limited edition white and gold jars and bottles. Because the Kiehl’s bestsellers always deserve some space in your skincare cabinet. Afterall, they’ve got 170 years to prove it.

Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate + Vit C and Hyaluronic Acid

Kiehl’s latest serum is a potent blend of Vitamin C (an eyebrow-raising 12.5 per cent) and hyaluronic acid. Formulated to smoothen the appearance of lines and pores; the Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate is indeed powerful enough to leave a warm and tingly sensation on the skin upon application. The slight stinging feeling did not last more than 10 seconds on my normal-combination skin though. Although it might further irritate those with intolerant skin. After using it three days and nights in a row, I’ve noticed a perceptible improvement to my skkn texture. Somehow, my skin also looks less oily throughout the day. This serum leaves behind a silky-smooth matte finish, and is lightweight enough to be layered between a lotion, and moisturiser, sunscreen, foundation.

Kiehl’s launches Apothecary Preparations in Singapore

A hundred and sixty-six years ago, the first Kiehl’s formulas were sold out of an apothecary in New York’s East Village. Today, the skincare label is harking back to tradition and offering customised skincare products.  After a consultation with the beauty assistant where you identify your top two skin concerns, you go home with a bottle of Skin Strengthening Concentrate and two tubes of Targeted Complexes. Kiehl’s Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque

The first thing you’ll notice when applying this cool gel mask; it feels like you’re spreading a delicious citrusy marmalade on your face.  Blended with aloe vera and calendula petals, this rather viscous gel mask is formulated to cool and hydrate skin on hot days.  Apply a relatively thick layer on skin, leave on for five minutes. Then massage into skin before rinsing excess off. This quickie 5-min mask left my skin soft, smooth, and supple. It is the perfect complement to the bestselling Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner that is alcohol-free and soothing, as well as the Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash (a little bit goes a long way, gentle and does not strip skin of oils).

Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Brightening and Smoothing Moisture Treatment

To complement its award-winning Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution serum (19 awards, 4 million bottles sold), Kiehl’s has launched its new Brightening and Smoothing Moisture Treatment. The star ingredient in the skin-clarifying Spot Solution is Activated C, a Vitamin C derivative formulated to be more stable and effective in brightening. To create the Smoothing Moisture Treatment, Kiehl’s chemists worked on a gel-cream made with Activated C and Glycolic Acid.   The Glycolic Acid used in the Treatment softens skin without aggravating it (although this ingredient is usually used in harsher peeling products); preparing it to better absorb the Activated C for skin that is more even in tone. To moisturise, peony and white birch extracts are added.   Just a pea-sized amount of this rather slick gel-cream is enough for the entire face. It took some time for me to massage the formula into my skin, as it is relatively thick. But once it was absorbed, my face was left with a satin-matte finish. This makes it perfect as a make-up base. I layered this on …

Kiehl’s #ultralove charity project

Kiehl’s is one of the handful of beauty brands that has made a long-term commitment to giving back every year. For the month of September this year, it will be donating 100 per cent of the net proceeds from the sale of three limited edition products to the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF). 2016 also marks Kiehl’s 165th anniversary. Each of Kiehl’s three iconic products, the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream ($48 for 50ml); the Ultra Facial Cream ($48 for 5o ml); and the Super Multi-Corrective Cream ($95 for 50ml); are all decorated in designs by Singapore artistes. The money will go towards supporting the CCF’s top causes: Casework and Counselling; Financial Assistance; and Place for Academic Learning and Support. The Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream, as its name suggests, is an oil-free gel-cream moisturiser. While the Ultra Facial Cream is the richer, original formula made for long-lasting hydration. The Super Multi-Corrective Cream is an anti-ageing concoction that promises to lift, firm, and even out the skin texture.

Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense sunscreen duo

I can’t stress enough the importance of sunscreen.  It protects the skin from wrinkles, spots and sagging.  But yes, sunscreen can be too sticky, oily and thick. Causing clogged pores, and eventually acne. Kiehl’s sunscreens are one of my favourites. Especially the Ultra Light Daily UV Defense.  The watery cream spreads easily; does not leave a white cast on the skin; and there is no greasy afterfeel. Even though it offers a high broad spectrum protection of SPF 50 PA++++ I could layer it in between an oil serum and my foundation with no issues.   For those with sensitive, acne-prone skin, Kiehl’s has launched its new Mineral sunscreen. What’s a mineral sunscreen?  It contains mineral sunblocker ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide which deflects the sun’s harmful rays.  On the other hand, chemical sunscreen ingredients – such as oxybenzone – absorbs the sun’s rays and turns it into heat. This reaction can cause irritation on those with intolerant skin. Even though chemical sunscreens have better cosmetic properties as it smoothes on more …
