50 Years Strong: Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil

Makeup maverick Shu Uemura launched his first cosmetic product, the iconic cleansing oil, in 1957. The original Hollywood artist formulated the oil to help actresses remove their make-up quickly in between shoots, while maintaining their skin’s integrity. “Makeup starts and finishes with cleansing.” – Shu Uemura Shu, whose mantra has always been that beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin, knew the importance of proper cleansing from way back when. Clearly, when a product is created to fulfill a need and created with heart, it will have longevity in the market. 50 years on, Shu Uemura’s iconic cleansing oil is available in eight versions (including a balm and a gel-oil) and the category is a bestselling one for the brand. To mark the occasion, Shu Uemura has re-formulated its popular Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil. It is concocted with jojoba oil, olive oil, ginger root oil, and shea butter oil, to keep skin moisturised while stripping it of (waterproof) makeup and other impurities. The best way to use the cleansing oils? With dry hands on a …

Pony Effect Customising Lip Palette

The difference between regular products, and the ones that are designed by make-up artists is always apparent. Like South Korean YouTube sensation Pony’s Customising Lip Palette. It comes with ten creamy shades – including yellow, blue, white, black and purple. The colours are a little too avant garde for your regular K-Beauty brand you say? You could wear them on their own, or mix it with the regular pinks and reds in the palette to customise them. Just like the pros. Here’s how: Add white to make the pinks and reds more pastel Blend black with the pinks and reds for a sexier and darker finish Mix purple in the pinks and reds for the on-trend plummy fall shades Add blue to the pinks and reds for an unexpected purple twist Work yellow into the blues and pinks to turn them into more vibrant and warmer hues Such a simple but clever product. At a time when everyone can pick up make-up tricks off Instagram, YouTube and everywhere else on the Internet; items like these …

Tom Ford Velvet Orchid collection

I love the idea of a make-up extension line that is inspired by a perfume. There is a cohesiveness in the story line. And if make-up were part of the outfit that a woman slips on before a night out, the fragrance completes it. Tom Ford’s Velvet Orchid EDP was launched in 2014, to complement the house’s iconic Black Orchid EDP.   How the brand describes the scent: “An oriental floral that evolves the carnal grandeur and seductive power of the iconic Tom Ford Black Orchid into an uber-feminine fragrance lavished with notes of cool citrus, dramatic petals, suede accord, and vanilla. Rich, spicy, and intensely floral, it evokes a warm exotic garden. Notes: Orange Blossom, Hyacinth, Jonquil, Cattleya Leopoldii Orchid, Suede Accord, Vanilla Tincture. Lavish. Dramatic. Seductive.” What it smells like to me: Rich and sexy, sweet and musky; suede, relatively intense, warm and womanly. Like the perfume, the new make-up from the Velvet Orchid collection is encased in luxe and hefty, gold and purple packaging. The Velvet Bloom blush is a light pink mauve …

The anticipated skincare collaboration between the eat-clean, live-clean guru Ella Woodward of Deliciously Ella and Neal’s Yard Remedies, is now available in stores. If you don’t know who Ella is, here’s a quick rundown: When she had just hit 20, Ella found herself constantly sick with allergies, headaches, chronic fatigue and stomach aches; and a nervous system that would not function properly. Victoria Beckham x Estee Lauder

We first got wind of the exciting limited edition collab between Victoria Beckham and Estee Lauder in April. Now, it is finally here. “I WANT TO MAKE WOMEN FEEL EMPOWERED, TO FEEL SEXY AND CONFIDENT. THIS MAKEUP COLLECTION DOES THAT. I LOVE TO MAKE WOMEN FEEL LIKE THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES.” – Victoria Beckham The 13-piece collection lets you achieve VB’s signature make-up look: smokey eyes with an edge, highlighted razor-sharp cheek bones, glowing skin, and more. A few surprises which are not very VB, like a bright lipstick, and metallic eyeshadows, are also thrown in. And that’s what I love about this collection: it is not predictable. Prices start from $50 for a lip gloss, to $116 for a six-shade palette. Available at TANGS.com and TANGS at Tang Plaza exclusively from September 23, 2016; and the Estee Lauder Boutique @ ION Orchard from October 1, 2016. Here are The Beauty Gazette’s picks from this beautiful collection – the pieces that make up the Paris look, one of the clotheshorse’s fave cities.   Morning Aura …

Aesop’s Holiday 2016 Gift Kits

Aesop’s gift sets are perfect for those who are into design, and quality honest-to-goodness no-frills skincare items. The kits are always beautifully packaged with an illustrated sleeve, and a re-usable toiletry box. This year’s sets – named Pursuits of Passion – are inspired by the naturalist illustrators of yore, and designed by Norwegian artist Bendik Kaltenborn. There are six to choose from, and my pick is The Ardent Illustrator, named after the 19th-century naturalist Genevieve Jones. An avid collector of birds’ nests and eggs, she also paints vivid images of her rare finds. Inspired by John James Audubon’s masterpiece The Birds of America, she published a first volume in 1879, but died from fever shortly. Due to popular demand, her family completed the series in 1886 with a two-volume Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio. Inside The Ardent Illustrator set is a skincare trio of the signature items from the Parsley Seed range. The Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser (200ml) foams up easily to cleanse and gently exfoliate the skin; the Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Serum (100ml) …

Kiehl’s #ultralove charity project

Kiehl’s is one of the handful of beauty brands that has made a long-term commitment to giving back every year. For the month of September this year, it will be donating 100 per cent of the net proceeds from the sale of three limited edition products to the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF). 2016 also marks Kiehl’s 165th anniversary. Each of Kiehl’s three iconic products, the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream ($48 for 50ml); the Ultra Facial Cream ($48 for 5o ml); and the Super Multi-Corrective Cream ($95 for 50ml); are all decorated in designs by Singapore artistes. The money will go towards supporting the CCF’s top causes: Casework and Counselling; Financial Assistance; and Place for Academic Learning and Support. The Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream, as its name suggests, is an oil-free gel-cream moisturiser. While the Ultra Facial Cream is the richer, original formula made for long-lasting hydration. The Super Multi-Corrective Cream is an anti-ageing concoction that promises to lift, firm, and even out the skin texture.

Sneak peek: Urban Decay’s 2016 Holiday Collection

It is never too early to start planning for your Christmas shopping. Or just strategising on stocking up on the best value-for-money Christmas sets/ limited edition items. Here are The Beauty Gazette’s picks from Urban Decay’s Holiday Collection:   1) Liquid Moondust Eyeshadow The sparkliest eyeshadow around is now available in a liquid version. Available in eight shades. UD says: “Our innovative, lightweight formula feels cool and wears comfortably. Creamy to the touch, Liquid Moondust blends easily. After you apply it, you’ve got about 30 seconds to blend the colour out. And once it’s dry, Liquid Moondust won’t budge or crease.”     2) Naked Ultimate Basics Because you can never have too many neutral matte eyeshadows…Urban Decay’s Naked Palettes are the original ones that have you covered from barely-there eye contours to out-there smokey eye looks.
