In town for the launch of Aesop’s new Lucent Facial Concentrate (more details below), Dr Kate Forbes has been instrumental in the Australian brand’s formulas for the last 15 years.
She tells The Beauty Gazette why and how Aesop products can be blended together for a customised solution for the skin.
“Our approach to the skincare routine is simple: everyone is different.
It all depends on the environment they live and work in, their skin type, the skin-feel they like after the application of the products, their stress levels. All these factors affect how the skin looks.
So we talk to our customers to offer a prescribed solution for their needs, mixing and matching the options in the different ranges.
There is a palette of Aesop ingredients that we use quite frequently. Such as an aloe vera base for gel serums, and creams because it is so soothing; chamomile extract to calm; as well as the antioxidants like green tea extract and Vitamin C. So certain products work well when blended together.”
Here are some “formulas” Kate shared with The Beauty Gazette.
Just mix the products between your clean palms, or blend them in a clean cup or bowl and spatula.
1) Two pipettes of the new Lucent Facial Concentrate serum + eight pumps of the Blue Chamomile Hydrating Masque = an extra skin-calming and hydrating mask
Lucent is a lightweight gel serum that contains rose petals, skin-restoring niacinamide (Vitamin B3), as well as Vitamin C. It adds an extra shot of goodness to the hydrating chamomile gel mask.
2) A few drops of Fabulous Face Oil + a dollop of the Chamomile Concentrate Anti-Blemish Masque = a gentle treatment for oily skin with acne
The clay-based mask draws out deep-seated impurities as well as excess oil, while the Fabulous Face Oil adds that little more TLC to congested skin.
3) A few pumps of the Blue Chamomile Facial Hydrating Masque + a dollop of the B Triple C Facial Balancing Gel + a few drops of the Damascan Rose Facial Treatment = a pampering and nourishing formula
Perfect for long plane rides and dehydrated skin.
4) A dollop of Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste + a dollop of Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque = a cleanser/exfoliator/ mask paste for quick and efficient cleansing so you save two steps in your routine.
Slather this on and let it dry for 15 minutes. Then wet skin and gently exfoliate. Rinse.

“Aesop doesn’t make a lot of products. There are just around four launches a year. We spend time researching to make sure that the products work. We pay attention to details and quality, and focus on what’s inside the jar. We go with what is safe and effective, not necessarily new.”
